The Controversie over Global Warming - 1995 Words

Global warming, a major concern in today’s society, is the increase in the temperature of the oceans and atmosphere that occurs when incoming energy levels are greater than outgoing energy levels. There are numerous causes of global warming that can potentially affect every aspect of life on Earth. Typically, the causes of global warming are divided into two primary categories: human causes and natural causes. And while there is very little that humans can do to eliminate the natural causes, there are several ways we can reduce the human causes. Human activities are the leading contributing factors to climate change contributing to global warming. Whether it’s driving cars or heating our homes with natural gas, we are releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. According to an article written by Darryl Fears, â€Å"the planet is warming at an accelerated pace without any doubt, that humans are causing it with 95 percent certainty and that the past three decades h ave been the hottest since 1850.† The majority of human causes of global warming can be contributed to the increase of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, into the atmosphere. Of the greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide is said to be the most considerable cause of global warming, and most carbon dioxide emissions are the result of burning fossil fuels. Fossil fuels, such as coal and oil, contain high amounts of carbon and when these fuels are burned, a major amount of carbon dioxide

South Africa Gdp Compared to Brazil’s Free Essays

Personal quote: Through economics, engineer the world†¦ ECONOMICS 232 BRAZIL- SA REPORT Introduction In 2010, South Africa joined The BRIC and set its level of ambition not only as an African leader, but also as an emerging world class economy along Russia, China, India and Brazil. This report will analyze and look at the economic trends and fluctuations between the later and South Africa from the year 2000 to 2010 using released World Bank data. Analysis According to the World Bank, South Africa GDP was of about one hundred and thirty two billion in 2000 while Brazil’s was at six hundred and forty four billion Dollars. We will write a custom essay sample on South Africa Gdp Compared to Brazil’s or any similar topic only for you Order Now Over the following decade 2000 – 2010, the two economies registered a considerable and equal improvement of their total production with a respective increase of 41 % for South Africa and 42% in the case of Brazil. The GDP per capita on the other hand increased at a lower rate over the same period. While South Africa leveled up by 22. 4%, Brazil bettered its GPD per capita by 25 . %. This further entails a GDP yearly increase of $ 1095 /capita with regards to the former, and $1409/capita for the later. A better look at aggregate expenditure components will provide more detailed resources in explaining the above increase of GDP within the two economies. In 2000, South Africa and Brazil consumption by households ( C ) was about 63% and 64% of GDP, largely above the rest of the components where total gross capital formation ( I ) lied low with 16% and 18% respectively, and lastly a total government expenditure ( G ) of 18 and 19%. As it appears, the two economies spent relatively equivalent proportions of their expenditure aggregate component on GDP. At the end of the decade,2010, total consumption ( C ) rose by 49 % for both economies, Investment ( I ) strongly incremented by 93% with regards to South Africa and 52% in the case of Brazil which correlated with a respective increase of 3. 17% and 45% increase in the money supply in both countries over the period. Parallel to the increase in GDP, the two economies registered noticeable increases of Gross Value Added ( VGA ). In fact, between 2000 and 2010, South Africa VGA increased by 38% while Brazil as usual experienced a little higher accretion of 41 %. Looking at sectorial contribution, tertiary sector imparted for more than half of total VGA in 2000 as illustrated by the graphs below. 1. 1 South Africa World Bank 2000 data analysis : Sectorial Contribution to VGA . 2 Brazil World Bank 2000 data analysis : Sectorial contribution to VGA In 2010, South Africa tertiary contribution to VGA only increased marginally by 3% and hence moved from 65% in 2000 to 68% in 2010 where it leveled up to Brazil’s. Conversely, primary and secondary sector contribution deteriorated between 2000 and 2010 . The South African primary sector declined from 3% to 2% while the secondary also experienced a marginal decline of 3%. On that point, Brazil went through proportional changes with secondary sector falling from 28% to 25%, leaving the primary with a small yet surprising amelioration of its contribution from 5. 60% to 5. 86% . Graph 2. 1 and 2. 2 provide a more visual depiction of the above facts. 2. 1 South Africa World Bank 2010 data analysis : Sectorial contribution to VGA 2. 2. Brazil World Bank 2010 data analysis : Sectorial contribution to VGA Besides the above increase in VGA, another important factor to be onsidered is how the level of openness of both countries drastically evolved over the decade 2000 -2010. South Africa exports incremented by 13% while Brazil’s skyrocketed by 86%. This implies that Brazil opened to the rest of the world at a much higher level, local firms growing into world competitors, which not only appreciated the country’s currency but increased its competiveness and decreased dependency on imported products. South Africa imports increased by 73% in contrast to Brazil which only increased by 21%. This high level of imports from South Africa will eventually result in the deterioration of the balance of payment. Moreover, while Brazil rate of unemployment oscillated between 6 and 9% over the decade, South Africa experienced a rather high rate of unemployment, the lowest in 2007 and 2008 with an average rate of 23% and the highest between 2002 and 2003 with an average of 31%. Conclusion This report deciphered and revealed an objective analysis of two BRICS economies, precisely South Africa and Brazil over ten years, 2000-2010. Is the World Flat An Analysis of Workflow Software an Example of the Topic Science and Technology Essays by

Is the World Flat? An Analysis of Workflow Software 1. Workflow software does the jobs that human beings do not want to be bothered with or cannot logistically do on their own. Workflow software provides a way for computers to achieve their highest potential so that humans can address more important tasks (White, 2003). Workflow software has become so common that many people do not realize just how many tasks it does within the computer in order to make technology more applicable and easy to use. Further, workflow software enables humans to save time by automating routines and sub routines that a great deal of time would be spent on otherwise (White, 2003). The most obvious example is email filtering. If humans had to filter their own email they would spend more time engaging in this task and less time would be available to get on with other more important things. Email filtering allows the computer to do the filing so only the most important or desired messages can be read and the rest can be ignored. This benefits businesses in all sectors because it frees up time for employees to improve productivity by working on more pressing tasks. Another good example is data entry. Work flow software enables those entering data to reduce the amount of time they spend entering the same information into multiple forms. Medical transcriptionists are a good example of a business that benefits from workflow software with regards to data entry. A final example of workflow software is in the retail business sector because it deals with a large amount of online and phone orders. Workflow software makes these processes more efficient by automating order processing, refunds and merchandising tracking (White, 2003). Need essay sample on "Is the World Flat? An Analysis of Workflow Software" topic? We will write a custom essay sample specifically for you Proceed 2. There are many positive aspects of working with workflow software. The most important benefit is the time aspect described above. In addition, another benefit is the speed that messages can be spread among people in order to improve the efficiency and speed of getting things done. Workflow software is similar to the historical practice of sending messages by a messenger (Ingelsby, 1998). As technology has advanced over the years, email, faxes and instant messaging have become the avenues for getting information from one person to another (Ingelsby, 1998). As technology advances and improves the speed of getting things done, it also causes humans to discover new ways that it slows them down. To return to an example given above as email gained in popularity it soon became apparent that filtering was a time consuming task and workflow software helped solve that problem. Another important benefit to workflow software is the increased amount of customer or patient attention one receives. The medical field is an excellent example of a sector of society that utilizes workflow software to improve the overall care that patients receive. When doctors utilize workflow software to free up their time as well as spread information among all caregivers then patients receive faster and more high quality care (Ingelsby, 1998). Utilizing workflow software, doctors are able to streamline patient care, manage disease prevention and handle clinical care delivery better (Ingelsby, 1998). At the same time, workflow software can match the right people with the right jobs (Ingelsby, 1998). Workflow software makes jobs easier and speedier but it does not do the work for them. Therefore, people who do jobs associated with workflow software must understand the importance of using it to improve customer or patient care. 3. One negative to using workflow software applies directly to what was discussed at the end of the last question. The right people have to be chosen for each specific job (Ingelsby, 1998). When the wrong people are chosen for the job it can ultimately defeat the purpose of using software designed to make jobs easier and more efficient. Another negative is the lack of face to face conversation and interaction that takes place in some business sectors that use workflow software (Friedman, 2007). For example, the retail industry relies on automated systems to make ordering and delivering goods faster. While this can certainly improve customer satisfaction it can also eliminate the joy of human interaction during business transactions. 4. Despite the few negatives, I think workflow software is here to stay. At the same time, I also think that workflow software will continue to be enhanced as humans find more ways that it can free up time and make things run more smoothly. According to Friedman, workflow software has contributed to the flatness of the world by eliminating human contact (Friedman, 2007). Friedman goes on to suggest that this flattens the global playing field by eliminating much of the competition that existed before the twenty-first century (Friedman, 2007). Friedmans main problem with the flattening of the world is that it takes away important opportunities from American citizens (Friedman, 2007). In this way, I agree that workflow software will continue to flatten the world. As more and more jobs are outsourced to other countries and more and more jobs are eliminated because of workflow software, many Americans will be forced to find a new profession or find a less prestigious job to make ends meet (Friedman, 2007). Ultimately, I think workflow software is a vital component of any business because it improves the capacity for productivity and profit. At the same time, Friedman makes some important and valid points regarding workflow software and its implications in the lives of hard working Americans. Therefore, my opinion regarding workflow software is that it is here to stay and will continue to be improved upon. American corporations have a responsibility to ensure that the workflow software that they utilize benefits American workers. I also agree with Friedman that Americans should be encouraged to receive training in fields that rely on human behavior rather than computer programming (Friedman, 2007). In order to prevent further flattening it is important that Americans can rely on certain jobs that require direct application of skills that cannot be replaced with workflow software. Friedman, Thomas L. (2007). The World is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-first century. New York: Picador USA. Ingelsby, Tom. (1998). Smoothing the bumps in workflow. Evolving Enterprise, 1 (2): Retrieved on April 29, 2009 White, David. (2003). What is workflow software? WiseGeek. U.S. vs. U.N Security Council essays

U.S. vs. U.N Security Council essays The relationship between the United States and the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has been very unstable. With most of the international conflicts that occurred during and after the Cold War, the United States has constantly found itself on the defensive with the U.N. and other nations. Where American idealism was the motivating force behind the creation of the United Nations during the waning days of World War II, it was American values that shaped the world organization. However, with the mist of the Cold War arising, the United Nations mirrored the increasing antagonistic competition between the United States and the Soviet Union. United States foreign policy revolved around the prevention of communism and Soviet expansion while the foreign policy goals of the United Nations began to stray away from U.S. policies. With the beginning of the decolonization process emerging, hostile Third World coalitions began to form (which the Soviets allied with) with strong anger towards both European powers and the United States. As a result, U.S. attitude toward the United Nations was filled with wariness and hostility, thus, the U.S. started to become less multilateral and more unilateral in making foreign policy decisions. Although the United States retreated back towards U.N. policies at the end of the Cold War (Reagan Administration), the U.S. has once again has determined its decision making on global security without the support of the United Nations. Despite the fact that the mere creation of the U.N. was to encourage and ensure international security and peace, key questions must be considered- whether or not UNSC approval is necessary for a major power to enter into a conflict or participate in humanitarian intervention. In addition, is the Security Council able to determine what conflicts are just or ethical? In order to answer these important questions, the relationship bet ...

Strategic Audit of Wal-Mart and Kmart Case Study

Strategic Audit of Wal-Mart and Kmart - Case Study Example It was started in the year 1962 in Rogers, Arkansas, by Sam Walton. It took a long way to reach an annual sales turnover of $1 billion. By the year 2002, Wal-Mart became the world's largest retail giant with sales of $218 billions. In the initial days of starting the business, Wal-Mart designed a strategy to build large discount stores in rural areas. Wal-Mart employed the strategy of selling branded products at a very low price. Initially, the management of the firm decided to develop the firm as a one-stop discounted departmental chain store with a vast variety of general merchandise goods to be offered to the customers that too at a low price. The management's initial focus was on its purchase decisions. The firm focused on exploring each and every opportunity that helped in general merchandise goods. The two important products of the entire Wal-Mart product line on which the firm laid a strong emphasis were health products and beauty products. The stores used to maintain a high stock of these products. When the firma became successful in opening more than 279 stores by the end of the year 1979, the next focus was on designing strategies for expanding the firm aggressively. In contrast, to the other retail stores who built ware houses in order to serve the already existing outlets, Wal-Mart used to first build distribution centers and later started stores around the distribution centers. This strategy of Wal-Mart helped the firm in pooling the advertising and distribution overheads. The firm also focused on the transportation time needed for a customer to reach the outlet. The strategy of aggressive expansion turned out to be a big success because Wal-Mart became the largest retailer and discount stores in United States by the end of the year 1991 which had almost 1,573 Wal-Mart outlets in 35 states. Once the firm attained the position of national discount department store chain, it designed its outlets in such a way that they provided a one-stop-shopping to its customers. The outlets were designed to have 40 different departments like apparel, health products, beauty products, toys etc. Wal-Mart was strict on not spending huge amount on special promotions and advertising strategies etc. It rather operated its outlets on a concept of "everyday low prices." It was a belief in every customer that the Wal-Mart stores would provide them with a friendly, clean and a very pleasant experience every time they shop. The year 2001 was a real challenging era not only to the retail industry but also for many other industries. The reason for this being like a year that ended with a worst holiday season i.e end of 2000, energy crisis, the rise in the unemployment factor, the spending of the consumers became sluggish and last but not least - terrorist blasts of the WTO on September11, 2001. Tho ugh the firm became successful in almost every strategy designed, it did not neglect to focus on the external market environment at the same time. The firm strongly believed that their business in the forthcoming year would definitely be affected by the external market environment. The external factors would also influence the financial figures in the firms' balance
